I know that keeping animals in captivity is controversial however the cold hard facts are if we don't many animals will become extinct. Having Places like this in Chiang mai serve two purposes. One is adding to the gene pool for breeding programs around the world to access. Two is to help educate people about these magnificent animals.
Elephant jungle Sanctuary is about an hour out of Chiang mai City. They are doing their part to rescue working elephants so as to give them a better life.
Covered in mud and sweat and happy as can be after a day with the Elephants.
